Crossing Festival 2009

This is the 5th year that the Crossing Festival will be taking place at the Caochangdi Workstation. Five years is about the time it takes for an infant to develop into a child: to learn to speak and walk on its own. The problem is, are we able to speak our own words yet? Can we really walk on our own? And in the future, will we be able to continue speaking, and walking? There are? no one can guarantees here, for the reality that surrounds us is just too brutal. This is not the same brutality that we faced several years ago, when we had no freedom to express anything. But now that we¡¯re more open, we turn around to find ourselves surrounded by the realities of entertainment, pragmatism, and material benefit. Freedom of expression, once a society-wide issue, became an individual¡¯s struggle.

This year, the ¡°Performance Space¡± aspect of our Crossing 2009 Festival presents a joint production between our Beijing Living Dance Studio and the Swiss group CapriConnection. Both groups are dealing with the topic of Mystery, using ¡°medicine¡± as a starting point for inspiration. Before starting to work on the pieces, the two groups sat down together and dialogued about the topic, discussing and investigating...
