May Festival 2010
The year 2010 marks the 5th annual May Festival at Caochangdi Workstation. The soundtrack to this year¡¯s festival is the sound of demolition. The reverberations have been resounding since last year. With only the brief prelude of a bulldozer¡¯s rumble, Caochangdi could also vanish into thin air, as if it had never existed at all.? Even a place of countless stories and glories can vanish in the blink of an eye. Who would miss such a trivial village? This year¡¯s May Festival is one step ahead of the bulldozer. We can proceed with our festival, which is especially extensive and abundant this year.
Performance Space will feature performances from the 2010 Young Choreographers¡¯ Project. Additionally, this year marks the start of New Stage, New Creation, a project whose purpose is to provide a stage for active young choreographers to present their work. This year we are pleased to present new work from several past ¡°young choreographers,¡± as well as the premiere of a new work by Tian Gebing¡¯s Paper Tiger Studio called Reading.
Film Forum will be presenting the Villager Documentary Project¡¯s newly completed films My Village. In our New Documentary Films program we will be presenting a Personal Documentary program entitled ¡°Show Your Privates.¡±
As for May Festival¡¯s Filmmaker In Focus program, we will be hosting two foreign documentary filmmakers and screening their films in our festival: the Swiss documentary filmmaker Vadim Jendreyko and renowned Japanese documentary filmmaker Kazuo Hara. Mr. Jendreyko is here thanks to our continued cooperation with Swiss Films, which has made it possible to host and learn from a number of Swiss filmmakers over the last two years. This year, Mr. Jendreyko will host our documentary film workshop.
Creative production workshops and exchange activities have always been at the core of Caochangdi Workstation¡¯s programming, and this May Festival presents many opportunities. The Villager Documentary Project¡¯s post-production workshop will take place in April, when the villager filmmakers will begin to edit their new films. Vadim Jendreyko will also be hosting the five-day documentary production workshop this year. Jean Perret, director of Visions du R¨¦el (an international documentary film festival in Nyon, Switzerland), will be hosting ¡°Jean Perret¡¯s Atelier,¡± a presentation and workshop on the analysis and criticism of cin¨¦ma v¨¦rit¨¦. UC San Diego professors Paul G. Pickowicz£¬Zhang Yingjin, and Cheng Jian will be holding a panel discussion regarding ¡°Overseas Perspectives on Chinese Independent Films,¡± which will include a discussion with independent filmmakers. Lastly, Taiwanese dancer Su Wen-qi and Living Dance Studio¡¯s Wen Hui will be co-hosting a dance workshop.
