Young Choreographers Project 2010
Call for Applications

1. Introduction

?????? Caochangdi Workstation (CCD) and Living Dance Studio initiated the Young Choreographers Project in 2006, and 2010 sees the project move into its 5th consecutive year. In the past four years, the project has received a total of 82 applications from applicants in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing, Yinchuan, Anshan, Xi¡¯an, Tianjin, Xiamen, and Wuxi. Of those, 38 were selected to receive funding, and their original works were presented in CCD¡¯s May Festival. This was the first stage of the project. Of these 38 artists, 14 were chosen to move into the second phase of the project: they were given further funding for ¡°Creative Development¡±, which allowed them to further develop their choreographic pieces, as well as perform in CCD¡¯s Crossing Festival, Fringe Festival in Shanghai, Crossing Festival in Kunming, Crossing Festival in Shenzhen and the New Stage for Young Choreographers, also organized at CCD.

?????? The Young Choreographers Project moves into this new decade while maintaining its original mission: to offer theater artists and performers a stage upon which to create and perform their work.

2.? Application requirements and guidelines

Submitted works should use movement and the body as the primary form of expression. Applicants who previously participated in the Young Choreographers Project will not be considered (this restriction does not apply to prior applicants who were NOT selected).

?????? Regarding applicant¡¯s project proposals, we want to emphasize that applicants must submit proposals for their newest piece, and that this piece should not have been performed before. We encourage: works related to and expressing an opinion about society and reality; and works displaying originality and experimentalism. The length of the work is at the discretion of the applicant, though it should not exceed 30 minutes.

?????? To apply, please submit a proposal that introduces the concept of your piece, its length, and number of performers involved. Please also include a copy of your resume and any previous works (this can include works the applicant has choreographed and/or performed in; please submit videos in DVD format). Application deadline is March 1, 2010. Submit applications by email to: ccdworkstation@263.net. (If applicant does not receive a confirmation email within 3 days, please resubmit your email. If, after resubmission, applicant still does not receive a reply, please contact us by telephone.)

3. Selection process

?????? A panel of three jury members will select 6 to 8 choreographers from among the applicants. Those selected will receive funding and an invitation to begin planning and rehearsing for their performances.
Selected applicants will be notified by email before March 10, 2010; results will also be published online at the CCD website (www.ccdworkstation.com).

4.? Execution and performance of selected works

?????? Production of pieces can begin upon notification of selection. Each selected choreographer will be subsidized 2000-3000RMB for the completion of his or her piece. Choreographers without access to rehearsal space can also arrange to rehearse in CCD Workstation¡¯s studio, though these participants must notify CCD as soon as possible for scheduling purposes.
All selected participants will perform their work between April 24 and May 8, during CCD¡¯s May Festival. After the performances the young choreographers will have a chance to discuss their work in small groups with their peers, the four coaches for the project, as well as three other choreographers who have been asked to participate in the discussions. These small discussion groups enable each young choreographer to receive more in depth feedback, and generate good discussions about their work.
We would like to emphasize that each young choreographer participating in the project will maintain complete creative autonomy and independence, but must be willing to participate in discussions.
In order to continually deepen the exchange and exploration among young choreographers, May Festival will also include seminars and workshops for the choreographers, performers, and viewing public.

5.? Continued development of pieces

At the end of May Festival, a special jury of six members will discuss each performance and select several choreographers to take their work into the ¡°Creative Development¡± phase of the project. These selected choreographers will receive continued support to further develop their projects. In August, these choreographers will return to CCD Workstation to present their works in progress (either through live performance or a DVD presentation), and discuss them with the coaches that are available to advise and help the choreographers prepare their work for CCD¡¯s Crossing Festival in October. There is also a chance that these pieces can be presented in the Crossing Festivals in Kunming and Shenzhen, and the Fringe Festival in Shanghai in 2010.
