Introduction of Crossing: Dance Festival, 2006

The second edition of the contemporary dance festival "Crossing" will also this year be hosted by Beijing's Nine theater and run by Living Dance Studio. The festival proudly presents eight productions; each of them different but all of them representing the variety that we find nowadays in contemporary danceand dance theater. Two European companies, Kobalt Works (Belgium) and anoukvandijk dc (the Netherlands) show their work for the very first time in Beijing. Then we have performances by two independent groups from China, Living Dance Studio from Beijing and Zuhe Niao from Shanghai. Last but not least, we are very happy to present three productions from young, upcoming Chinese dance companies : J-town.Film & Performance Lab (Ji Nan), Wang Ya'nan (Beijing)
and Feng Ying Experimental Modern Dance Studio (Beijing). All three were selected from the Young Choreographers' Project that took place in Caochangdi Workstation, in May 2006.Apart from performances, ¡°Crossing¡± also presents a number of challenging workshops and interesting lectures, conducted by European artists and professionals working in the contemporary performing arts scene. The name of this contemporary dance festival, "Crossing", encapsulates the crossing of life and performance; of reality and imagination; of different cultures, of dance, theater, film, technology and different art mediums; and of course, we hope, the crossing of and interaction with many different audiences.

Caochangdi Workstation Art Center is a Beijing independent art space involving performance art, documentary film/video, and video art. It was founded by filmmaker Wu Wenguang and choreographer Wen Hui in April, 2005. Its existence was made possible through the support of Beijing Storm; Kampnagel in Hamburg; Zuercher Theater Spektakel in Zurich; DOEN Foundation and Borneoco in the Netherlands; Asian Culture Council in the United States; and many friends and supporters both at home and abroad.

The Workstation located in northeastern Beijing's Caochangdi area. The Living Dance Studio is based there. The Workstation offers lovers of these art forms a venue in which they are invited, free of charge, to come, study, practice and interact, and information resources shared freely. The Workstation organizes performance festivals, film screenings as well as culture exchange programs, and plans to invite various performance and video artists/scholars/professionals from China and abroad to participate in ongoing interactive workshops and lectures.

The Workstation has built an Archival Library; the collection includes videos and DVDs of Chinese and international documentaries, video-art works, as well as contemporary dance and theater performances. It's open to the public free of charge. The library also houses an archival collection of catalogues, programs, and magazines of performances and exhibitions, both Chinese and international.
