Crossing Festival, 2007
From 27 September to 21 October 2007, Caochangdi Studio presents the third annual Crossing Festival.
This is an independent festival whose purpose is to advocate and further develop China¡¯s independent
contemporary dance and theater, and documentary film and experimental video. Founded by Caochangdi
Workstation & Living Dance Studio in Beijing in 2005, and co-organized by Borneoco / CultureXpress
in the Netherlands, we are happy to hold Crossing Festival at Caochangdi Workstation for the first time this year.
In 2007 we have continued to nourish the original concept for Crossing Festival. This year we are proud
to host nine performance groups and eleven productions from various countries and backgrounds.
The diversity of the work represents the variety that we find nowadays in contemporary dance and dance theater.
We have three independent Chinese dance companies performing in Crossing this year: Living Dance Studio from Beijing
will perform Report on 37.8¡æ, as well as a new and revived version of Skirt; Paper Tiger, a performance group that has
been in Beijing for ten years, will present it¡¯s new work Cool, which toured to several European cities this past summer;
Zuhe Niao from Shanghai, who performed in the last two Crossing festivals and has also just returned from a European
tour, will present the Beijing premiere of it¡¯s new piece, The Left Cheek, in our festival this year.
Caochangdi Workstation and Living Dance believes strongly in cultural exchange in the performing arts,
and this year three European dance companies will contribute to the festival: Laboratorio Nove from Italy,
2movedancecompany from the Netherlands, and Warner & Consorten, also from the Netherlands. For all of them,
this will be the first time to show their work in China.
Last but not least, we are very happy to present three productions from young, upcoming Chinese choreographers:
Tian Zhiming (Beijing), nunu (Shanghai) and Eagle Ho (Guangzhou). All three were selected from the second annual
Young Choreographers Project that took place in Caochangdi Workstation in May 2007.
Apart from performances, this year Crossing Festival is programming Dance for Camera, a project conducted by Janine
Dijkmeijer and Hans Beenhakker from the Netherlands. The purpose of this program is to further develop the art of dance
on film in China. In addition, there will be a number of other challenging workshops and interesting lectures given by European
artists and professionalsworking in the contemporary performing arts scene.
Film Forum is another large component of Crossing Festival. Here the focus is on young, independent filmmakers
and their recently completed documentary films. This year we will be screening work by young filmmakers from China,
India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Taiwan.
The name of this contemporary dance festival, "Crossing", represents the crossing of life and performance,
of reality and imagination, of cultural exchange, of dance, theater, film, technology and different art mediums.
It is our hope that our Crossing Festival will also lead to meaningful interactions and¡®crossings¡¯ between artists
and audience members alike.
