The Beijing based dance theatre company the Living Dance Studio (LDS) was founded in 1994
by choreographer Wen Hui and documentary maker Wu Wenguang. Before starting this company together, both artists were already well-known and respected for their achievements in their respective work fields.

The LDS is an independent company, which means they get no funding from and are not facilitated in any other way by the Chinese government .

Right now the LDS is entering a new phase with the establishment of their own space, which will be Beijing 's first independent, not-for-profit centre for the performing arts. It is situated in the Chaoyang district, not far from the airport and close to the Dashanzi Art District (also called “ 798” ). At this moment the space is being renovated and according to schedule it will open in the beginning of April 2005.

Then the Living Dance Studio will have facilities for its own rehearsals, small performances, workshops, a resource centre on contemporary dance as well as two guestrooms for visiting artists. For larger performances the facilities of the Chaoyang Community Centre, with which
the LDS already collaborates, are at their disposal.
