The Process of The 100 Villager Photographers
After the villagers¡¯ photo contest was announced in September 2005, the project received applications from villagers around the nation expressing interests in taking documentary photos on village governance. The project staff also handed out still cameras to selected villagers
The selection of the successful candidates was based on interests expressed by the candidates to take photos on village governance related issues. It also emphasized a balance between genders, among ages and geographic areas. Previous experience in photography was not required. Selected villager photographers were each awarded a Kodak automatic still camera with four rolls of negative films. For those who did not have any previous experience in photography, training was offered on the spot.
Completed film was mailed back to Caochangdi Workstation to develop and print. By the end of Year 2005, Caichangdi had received 300 rolls of film containing some 6,000 pictures.
The Evaluation of the Films and the Photos
In February 2006, the project organized an evaluation of the best films and photographs. Two panels of evaluators were set up for this activity: a panel of seven artists and art critics and a panel consists of five villagers (migrant workers). Prizes were given by both panels.
